These mills have successively been grouped under PNP XXI, PNP XXI - XXII and then PTP XXI - XXII with the headquarters in Surabaya throughout. The combined group later became PTPN X. I believe all the mills are still operational although Merican appears to be vulnerable. When Ross (August 1979) and I (June 1978) first visited the Kediri area we did not realise that we were witnessing the twilight of field operation in those mills which were still involved in this practice. However, to make more time would not only have needed a heavy dose of foresight but would have meant foregoing other visits which would also prove to be unrepeatable, especially those on the main line. |
