This was a large mill with a steam fleet to match. However, the construction of the new mill at Pesantren and associated changes led to a disastrous collapse in steam activity. The field lines were closed and much of its traditional growing area was transferred to Pesantren. Many steam locomotives went to Pesantren and other mills including Cukir, Jombang, Gempolkerep and (very late on) Merican. The mill operation became very run down and at one stage it seemed that bullock haulage would become the 'norm'. I am not sure exactly when steam finished here, but by the late 1990s, a visit was not worth the entry fee. |
