Not quite steam trams but…
Definitely not steam trams but…
This page was updated on 29th April 2024 with the
discovery of an Énergie 0-4-0T near Charleroi in
Belgium, previously on 17th October 2014 with a
picture of the J. S. Fry Sentinel and on 16th June 2013 with a new entry
for the locomotive in the Deutsches Technikmuseum, Berlin..
While doing this research, a number of oddballs turned up
including European shunting locomotives with a vertical boiler which
is enclosed with the cab,
they are by no stretch of the imagination steam tram locomotives but they
are curiosities which most serious students of the subject would find
interesting, hence their inclusion on this separate page.
The Sentinel locomotives are a wonderful cul-de-sac in
steam development. If pushed, I would describe them as a 'stationary steam
engine on rails', the connection being by crankshaft, (gears) and chain. I have
included only a small selection of those which are the most tramlike -
chosen for their international spread and accessibility. In addition to
those listed below, there are others which from the outside look like an
early diesel shunter, for more information on all Sentinel products
(including road vehicles) see the Sentinel
Drivers Club website and in particular their list
of surviving Sentinels (the link http://www.sentinelwaggons.co.uk/3.Sentinel/LOCOSUV Sheet1.pdf
was out of date and some details were wrong). The
last
real Sentinels in the world are to be found in Cruzeiro, Brazil. Serious
locomotive students should also read http://sentinel7109.blogspot.co.uk/
which covers the restoration of Sentinel 7109 and includes information on others
from this builder.
