Ketanggungan Barat former Sugar Mill

There was a sugar mill at Ketanggungan Barat when the Japanese invaded but it was not reopened after the war. The surrounding estate was replanted and the cane brought in conventionally. However, it was then transferred to the operational mill at Tersana Baru some distance away. Historically these trains would run overnight and the empties would return next morning. This was operated in two sections with locomotives being exchanged at Luwung Gajah near Ciledug. In time, first diesels were used from Luwung Gajah to Tersana Baru, allegedly because a steam locomotive or two had failed while a train was crossing the main line on the flat. A new road was then built parallel to the line and cane was also sent by truck. As the steam locomotives became less and less reliable, diesels and even tractors were used for haulage. Finally, between the 2001 and 2002, a bridge 3km east of Ciledug failed and rather than repair it, the decision was taken to end the service. |
