Gula Java - Wringinanom Wringinanom is the second smallest mill on the island, with a capacity slightly greater than that of Olean next door. The other mills in the area (with the exception of the closed mill at De Maas), Panji, Prajekan and Asembagus have rather less in the way of stationary steam engines. Like Olean it retains many of its original buildings but in this case they are not in their own separate compound but distributed on either side of the small road that runs past the mill. The mill maintains an extensive narrow gauge railway system but it retired its last steam locomotive several years ago when it took delivery of several small diesels from De Maas. Like Olean, it relies very largely on irrigation for its cane and yields from its catchment area are almost as good and the second best on the island. Dating from some time in the 19th century, Wringinanom typically processes about 1100 tonnes of cane per day with a maximum output of SHS quality sugar of just about 70 tonnes. Like Olean, its continued survival must be in doubt, but it similarly has a vital role to play in the local economy.
