Gula Java - Tulangan Lying some distance south-west of Sidoharjo, Tulangan is just outside greater Surabaya which has allowed it to retain most of its charm. In view of its location and the fact that it is the smallest of the mills operated by PTPN X its future cannot be at all secure. Also it is clear that much of the equipment in the mill is life expired and in poor condition. I briefly visited Tulangan out of season in 1979 to see their steam locomotives but did not go inside the mill. Entering for the first time in 2002, I quickly realised that this was a mill of a rare quality in steam terms. Dating from some time in the 19th century, Tulangan typically processes about 1500 tonnes of cane per day with a maximum output of SHS quality sugar of just about 90 tonnes.
