After milling, the residual cane is known as bagasse (ampasse in Bahasa Indonesia). It is then shifted by a conveyor system where most of it will end up in the mill furnaces. Traditionally the conveyor would have been powered by a small steam engine, but almost without exception these have been replaced by electric motors. Apart from Wringinanom, the only mill which still uses steam (in part) is Jatibarang where this unidentified vertical cylinder engine works the bagasse baler. (RD) |
