Gula Java - Powering the System

Traditionally sugar mills would ultimately have been steam powered throughout, although as electrical machinery became more widespread, generators were purchased. A combination of rural locations and an unreliable public supply means that even today all mills generate their own electricity, mainly with a mixture of steam turbines and diesel generators. Most mill boilers are fired with bagasse (cane waste), although several of the modern mills advertise their use of low grade oil by a trail of black smoke from their chimneys.
