The Móra La Nova Railway Museum 2025

This page is one of many covering the railway museums of Europe. Click here for the index.

This is a report from James Waite following up that from Jordi Sasplugas Deu and some notes from Thomas Kautzor.

Below are broad gauge pictures, there are separate pages for

Introduction and metre gauge locomotives

Narrow gauge locomotives

For reference, this is a list of the broad gauge locomotives mentioned in the report:

Gauge Type Builder  Number Date  Running Number Status
1668 mm  0-4-0T  Couillet (Belgium)  791 1886  020-0236 in service
1668 mm  2-4-0T  Sharp Stewart (UK)  2710 1877  120-0202 in service
1668 mm  2-8-2  Macosa (Spain)  155 1957  141F-2316 under restoration
1668 mm  4-8-2  MTM (Spain)  635 1951 241F-2238 static exhibit
1668 mm  4-6-2+2-6-4  Euskalduna (Spain)  191 1931  462F-0401 static exhibit
1668 mm  2-8-2+2-8-2  Babcock & Wilcox (Spain) 730 1961  282F-0421 under restoration

The two broad (5ft 6in/1668mm) gauge Garratts at the museum, Pacific Garratt RENFE no 462F-0401 (Euskalduna 191/1931), one of six of the type, and Mikado Garratt 282F-0421 (Babcock & Wilcox 730/1961), one of the last steam locos built for Spain though the design also dated back to 1931. Both types originated on the FC Central Aragon which ran north from Valencia to Catalayud and Zaragoza. 282F-0421 may eventually be restored to working order as a long-term project. Both types of Garratt, the only main line ones in Spain, later ran on the coast line north from Valencia as far as Tarragona, where it joined the electrified main line from Móra la Nova to Barcelona and on to the French border. These two locomotives arrived at Móra la Nova in 2022.

4-8-2 241F-2238 (MTM 635/1951) and 2-8-2 141F-2316 (Macosa 135/1957). 141F 2316 was rebuilt by RENFE in 1975 and fitted with a new boiler only six months or so before it was withdrawn at the end of RENFE steam operation, and so should be a good long-term runner. Restoration began in 2014 and is proceeding as time and resources permit.

The peculiar-looking 0-6-0T 030-0236 (Babcock & Wilcox 148/1925) with its narrow side tanks was withdrawn from RENFE service many years ago and plinthed at the station at Valls, north of Tarragona. It has recently arrived at Móra la Nova on long-term loan for restoration to working order.

2-4-0T 120-0202 (Sharp Stewart 2710/1877) was previously MZA (Madrid-Zaragoza-Aragon) 178. It has been in working order since March 2024 but wasn't in steam for the gala.

0-4-0T 020-1886 (Couillet 791/1886) was previously MZA 606. It's one of several of these little locos to have been preserved, and spent many years at the museum at Villanova i la Geltru (between Tarragona and Barcelona) before moving to Móra la Nova. It first ran again in 2021. The loco was in steam giving passengers rides in the open wagon.
