Preserved Standard Gauge Steam in Mexico 2012, Part 2

This page continues coverage of surviving non-NdeM standard gauge steam.

Although NdeM received its first diesels in 1944, in 1946 32 4-8-4 steam locomotives were ordered from ALCO (3025-32 & 3049-56) and Baldwin (3033-48). These QR-1 class were to be known as “Niagras”. N°. 3046 was the last NdeM steam locomotive to be overhauled at the Aguascalientes shops in 09-1963 and the "Niagras" were taken off the roster with the end of NdeM steam in 1965.

NdeM 3031 (ALCO 74386/1946) is privately owned by Engineer Francisco Moreno Lagunes and stored at a yard in Huehuetoca, MEXICO

NdeM 3033 (Baldwin 73018/07-1946) is on display at the former station, now a cultural centre, in Pachuca, HIDALGO

NdeM 3034 (Baldwin 73019/1946) is on display at National Railway Museum in Puebla, PUE

NdeM 3035 (Baldwin 73020/1946) is plinthed at the Rodolfo Landeros Park in Aguascalientes, AGS

NdeM 3036 (Baldwin 73021/1946) is on display at the Explora Science Park in Leon, GUANAJUATO, together with sleeping coach 177 “Lago di Chalco” and a caboose

NdeM 3038 (Baldwin 73023/1946) is on display at the Museo Technologico (MUTEC), Chapultepec Park, in Mexico City, DF, together with three coaches from the presidential train

NdeM 3040 (Baldwin 73025/1946) is on display next to the main road (CF 129) through Oriental, PUEBLA

NdeM 3056 (ALCO 74832/1946) is stored at the Bernal station, near Tequisquiapan, QUERETARO.

Of the survivors above, N°. 3031/5/6/40/56 were formerly stored at NdeM’s Huehuetoca scrap yard north of Mexico City. In addition to the above, 3027 (ALCO 74382/08-1946) is on display in Guadalajara, 3030 (ALCO 74385/1946) in Zacatecas and 3039 (Baldwin 73024/1946, also ex-Huehuetoca) in Monterrey, while N°. 3028 (ALCO 74383/08-1946), which was sold to the Great North Eastern Railroad Foundation, Inc. in the US in 1966, is undergoing a very slow restoration at the New Hope & Ivyland RR in Pennsylvania.
