In Sardinia, not much has changed from the situation reported by Clive Hepworth in 2017. FCS 400 has probably not operated since then, the Trenino Verde trains are all diesel loco-hauled or railcar, the Monserrato Museum remains closed, and most of the plinthed or dumped locos remain at the same locations they were at back then, except for rusty SFS 7 and 11 which were moved from Tempio to Sassari in 12.2020 for cosmetic restoration.
On February 23, 2021 however, a strange event happened. Thirty locomotives, railcars and other pieces of rolling stock were seized
from the depots of Monserrato, Mandas, Sassari and Macomer during an island-wide joint raid by the Guardia di Finanza and the Carabinieri’s Cultural Heritage Protection Unit. As the items could not be removed, they were secured with red and white flying tape. Investigators coordinated by the Public Prosecutor’s Office then carried checks to ascertain how the vintage stock was in a state of neglect and a poor state of conservation. Given that these items are considered assets of national historical interest, they should have been adequately preserved, and the investigators are now evaluating the possibility of pressing charges for a range of crimes from damage to the national historical cultural heritage, the illicit use of cultural assets, up to abuse of office.
