Sragi Sugar Mill
(600mm gauge)

For all sorts of reasons, Sragi was by far the most interesting operation in the area. It had a large and diverse steam fleet and its field lines lasted into the 21st century. In addition, cane was collected from the area around the closed mill at Comal and then transferred to Sragi overnight, a set of empties returning in the late morning. There were modern diesels but they were under-utilised for reasons I could never fathom but was never going to question. Over the years, the field lines were steadily cut back and at the end of the 2003 season those remaining were closed and the transfer trains ceased. Thereafter Sragi became a road yard operation and once trains were were propelled from yard to mill, derailments became endemic. Steam lasted until the end of the 2014 season, thereafter tractors and diesels were used. The mill has latterly been rebuilt, I do not know whether the railway survived.
