Throughout Java, the locomotive almost invariably arrived well ahead of its train’s being ready. This gave the crew a chance to carry out maintenance, such as oiling up, cleaning the tubes and of course, emptying the ashpan. In this August 1988 photograph, 5’s driver is busily oiling up. (RS)
