Olean Sugar Mill |

Olean was my favourite mill in Java by far. While Gondang had better mill machinery and Olean's fleet was as plain as its estate, overall it was as close as could be to a traditional mill which would have been seen back in the 1930s. This section represents a huge personal indulgence, there are far too many photographs and each location reappears many times. However, it was an important part of my life annually for some 20 years, all the best of the Java steam experience distilled down into one very small mill. The Jan Willem van Dorp Extra covers a single afternoon visit on 19th August 1984 sandwiched between visits to Semboro and Jatiroto at a time before I had yet to manage a trip to the fields although I had had a mill visit myself on an afternoon a few weeks earlier.
