Kedawung has stuck with its field lines into the 21st century but unfortunately, I had only one proper visit here before regular steam operation became history. In my case, it represents a missed opportunity in the 1980s. Kedawung’s track ran close to the base of the popular tourist attraction of Gunung Bromo and the mill tried 'agrotourism' directed at tourists visiting it. A 'tourist train' was assembled and it did very well until the Dutch company which brought most of the tourists failed to pay its bills... Interestingly, Kedawung had a different kind of tourist opportunity as well. The mill manager told Ross that he had been approached by several visitors from Germany, who were willing to work for nothing, as long as he would sign off on their hours towards a steam ticket. Of course, the mill rules precluded this. |
