Jatiwangi Sugar Mill |

Jatiwangi was perhaps the smallest mill in the area, one where visitors would have struggled to get more than basic photographs, not least because traditionally security here was far tighter than on average. While the yard was attractive and locomotives were well looked after, there was very much a tradition of running trains at night and the field lines were less accessible by road than most. Finally, the mill flirted with closure through the 1990s with short seasons, seasons when it refined imported sugar and at least one when it didn't work at all. Steam finished after the 1996 season and the 1997 season was its last. In the early and mid 1990s I spent odd days here but the photographic pickings were thin as the pages that follow show. As traffic declined, the mill's two diesels were able to handle much of the traffic. |
