The International Steam Pages

Acknowledgements

We are fortunate that I and a few other enthusiasts visited Java for sugar steam in the 1970s. From the 1980s until the second decade of the 21st century the number of visitors first rose and then fell as time finally caught up on the greatest narrow gauge industrial steam spectacle in the world. Naturally since most of the locomotives dated from before WW2, not all lasted until the time when most visitors came and some historical slides had not lasted the course as well as their subjects.

Special thanks go to the late Ray Gardiner, some of whose background studies are reflected in the captions. Ray was one of the few people whose company I unconditionally relished and we enjoyed some great times together in Java. Similarly the Industrial Railway Society who hold the late Frank Jones' photographic record - shown as (FJ, IRS collection).

While the vast majority of the pictures are mine, Ross Sadler (RS) filled more gaps than most and offered valuable insights into mill operation, especially those where I spent least time. Without his help I would have struggled to make the project as near complete as it is. Jan Willem van Dorp (JD) came on board after first publication with superb sets from Jatiroto and Semboro and hopefully more will follow from him,

Others whose contributions may have been in single figures but whose every picture is valued are gratefully acknowledged: '@' indicates those who are sadly no longer with us.
