De Maas Sugar Mill
(700mm gauge)

De Maas (at Besuki) was a small mill with a single main line (and a branch) that ran next to the north coast main road. Daylight trains were the rule and it was an utterly delightful operation. Ultimately, small diesels were cascaded here and the mill's closure at the end of the 1999 season was not the gricing disaster it would have been earlier. Personally, I wish it could have lasted a little longer as the mill had a superb collection of stationary steam engines.

De Maas was remote from any main line rail connection and I understand that traditionally sugar had been taken out to a waiting freighter, there being no port facilities here. No doubt by the time of my first visit, it would have been trucked out as it was almost everywhere else.
