The short lived 3ft (913mm) gauge BuBuBu Railway (1905-1929) was built along the coast, north of the west side of Zanzibar island. Running some 11 km from the waterfront it skirted what is now the historic Stonetown before running through the narrow main street of Darajani and out into the countryside, crossing a number of small bridges over creeks. A later new alignment avoided Darajani but a line through the town centre was an increasing annoyance as the amount of road traffic increased and by the time it closed, it seems few mourned its passing. I am grateful to Kevin Patience for providing these images and the information included here and in the captions. If you want to know more about this little known railway then you should get a copy of his book! Zanzibar and the BuBuBu Railway by Kevin Patience, published by the author in 1998, is available from 257, Sandbanks Road, Poole, Dorset, UK BH14 8EY, GBP £6 or U$9 postpaid. |
