The 57 class 4-8-4 + 4-8-4 Garratt was first introduced in 1939 and they were considered a most successful design. The later 58 class Garratts were based on this design and the most obvious difference is the flat-topped dome of the earlier locomotives. 5712 was on shed in Mombasa in January 1968. (BR)
