The 31 class 2-8-4 were built by Vulcan Foundry and were the lightest of the post Second World War tender locomotives and were found all over the system. 3124 'Chope' at Nairobi on 20th April 1973 had very clearly had the benefit of a full and recent overhaul and was waiting despatch to its home depot.
