The first Mallets date from around the time of the First World War, several like this one came second hand from Sicily. 440.008 (Ansaldo 1162/1915) awaiting repair in Asmara on 8th March 1967 was a compound Mallet with piston valves for rear (high pressure) cylinders and slide valves for front (low pressure) cylinders.
