The International Steam Pages

South Cerney Steam Rally (5th - 7th August, 2022)

This is one of a series of pages I have uploaded to illustrate facets of the steam rallies we have attended in the UK. Click here for the 2022 introduction and overall index.

In 2015 I wrote "What was previously the Gloucestershire Steam and Vintage Extravaganza is now the Gloucestershire Vintage and Country Extravaganza which says it all, it reflects more accurately the show's current offering. This year's programme listed some 80 buses, over 300 commercials and hundreds of cars of which few, if any, would have needed or asked for expenses. As such, it seems that despite the best efforts of the steam organisers, and unlike Welland the previous week, there are insufficient resources available to maintain engine numbers which were one third down on 2019 when it was last held. However, it is still a substantial steam offering and the show as a whole got a very good attendance when I attended on the Friday and Saturday, Sunday would have been similar. Well sated, I went to Torbay on the Sunday.

As I write this, there is scarcely a blade of green grass in the southern parts of the UK. This makes photography extremely challenging and for what are no more than record shots of preserved engines, I have made no attempt to adjust the colours because this camera is WYSIWYG. There is no possibility to get pictures here in the early morning light and by the time the sun is low again, most enginemen have very sensibly parked their steeds and headed off to a suitable refreshment venue. In this respect, not just here, the early and late season rallies have a distinct advantage.
