Raj Steam - Indian
Metre Gauge Steam |

Jan Willem van Dorp made several lengthy trips to India in the 1980s and 1990s, this index covers the metre gauge. He travelled almost everywhere by train save when he used public buses locally or to travel between two attractions to avoid having to double back. With a few exceptions, the Indian countryside where the metre gauge railways ran tended to be plain and flat and his pictures typically show trains in or in the vicinity of stations which offered the best chance of local colour. He was a meticulous record keeper and each picture will generally have a caption which gives the locomotive concerned, the identity of its train, the location and the date. He also went to Pakistan and a link to the metre gauge part of his travels is below. > While he visited some well known areas, he spent most time 'off the beaten track', there are many pictures of lines not covered in the initial Raj Steam compilation. By the time of his first visit, the railways were heavily standardised and most trains were hauled by YPs and YGs. However, there are a surprising number of 'significant others' including YBs, YDs, YLs and MAWDs. > |
