Gula Java - Crushing and Milling |
||
|
The first job at the mill is to extract as much juice as possible from the cane. Traditionally, cane was delivered on to a cane table, from where it was shifted by a conveyor to a crusher followed by a sequence of mills. In all bar three mills featured in detail elsewhere on this CD-ROM (Gondang Baru, Olean and Wringinanom) the crusher has been replaced by an electrically powered unigrator - more widely known as a shredder which effectively homogenises the cane. Cane knives and cutters have also come into use. Many mills have replaced their steam engines with steam turbines or even electric motors, features which are not documented here. At Kedawung, the mill uses a modern cane diffuser to extract the juice. All the large engines featured in this section are used to mill the cane. |
