Pepito Tey Mill |

Situated a few kilometres east of Cienfuegos, Pepito Tey Mill has rightly attracted an increased amount of attention in recent years - another of Cuba's classic American narrow gauge operations. Most visitors naturally gravitate to the line which runs next to the mill approach road as a regular succession of train loads of empties thrash their way up to Limpiesa loading point. However, because the line runs south to north the best time to photograph the operation is early or late. The north-east line (the 'quarry line') also features smokebox first empty working best photographed in the early morning. However, the real gem at the mill is the 'back line' to Lajitas loading point which was not in use for early visitors until the new acopio was built around 1990. At 8km this is much longer than the other lines and offers much more varied photographic opportunities although the condition of the parallel dirt roads does not encourage chasing. I have seen few pictures of this line although my own personal favourite is included in the main Zafra section. In fact, the main problem here is nothing to do with the railway, it is the mill equipment itself which has shown an alarming tendency to break down on fine sunny days.... |
