Puerto Rico Libre Mill lies some way south of Unión de Reyes which possesses a delighful station with an array of semaphore signals - however, if anyone has ever managed to photograph steam here it has not been brought to my attention. In recent years, the mill has been shut more often than it has been open and although cane has been worked away from the mill, it has been diesel hauled. It has never been a very popular mill with visitors, even in the early days and I have struggled to find a significant photographic record. Indeed, most of the pictures I have seen of the mill's steam locomotives have involved them working at other mills, either on a temporary basis or after a permanent transfer such as 1513 and 1716 now to be found at Australia Mill. The future of the mill is bleak as Minaz seeks to rationalise its operation and with 1409 reported at Cuba Libre Mill in 1999, the main hope for the remainder of the fleet is also an early transfer. |
