The International Steam Pages

Orlando González Ramírez Mill

In terms of action photography, Orlando González Ramírez Mill is probably most people's favourite in the Ciego de Ávila area. Of the 'steam' mills, it is by some way the smallest operation and at any time will have no more than one or two steam locomotives 'on line'.

However, it does have a number of things going for it. The locomotive fleet is far more varied (including regular 2-6-0s and 4-6-0s on line work), the system is compact, no more than one diesel is usually to be found working and most of all it seems to lack the high grass which makes photography a constant challenge elsewhere in the area.

The street running at Limones Palmero is shown in the main Zafra sequence and the trip through the middle of Las Trozas village is interesting if not very photogenic. For most people, the highlight of a visit here is the chase down the road next to the line from Cabrera in the late afternoon, the luckier ones will find two trains coming in more or less one after the other.

All the locomotives which are known to have worked at the mill recently are shown here with the exception of 1562 and 1836 which are in the locomotive gallery.
