Boris Luis Santa Coloma Mill is the 'mill on the hill'. Built on a saddle, the two field lines here approach from north and south up steep gradients. Until very recently, the south line was exclusively steam operated and the north line frequently so. In addition the scenery on the south line was attractive and so it is not surprising that this has always been a popular mill with visitors. Historically, the majority of its locomotives have been neither 2-8-0s nor Baldwins, which in Cuba is a definite plus! This mill was once part of the Hershey empire and it is, in fact, just a few kilometres from the north end of the system to the nearest point of the former Hershey railway and the lines of Camilo Cienfuegos Mill (formerly Hershey Mill). In the last couple of years, the mill has undoubtedly lost much of its attractiveness. Traffic has declined markedly and the regular availability of one or more large diesels has seen first the north line and latterly the south line lose its steam workings. |
