Antonio Sánchez Mill lies in a flat isolated area of western Cienfuegos province. The small town of Covadonga almost surrounds the mill and this provides perhaps its most attractive feature where trains work down the middle of the divided highway for their final approach to the mill. In recent years, visitors have found most of the steam fleet at work during the course of the season, but unfortunately usually only one or two at a time and then only for the occasional shunt and substitution for a failed diesel locomotive. With these kind of reports coming in, it is no surprise that fewer and fewer people bother to drop in and consequently, recent activity has not been well documented. This mill has a close working relationship with nearby Primero de Mayo Mill and on those occasions when the latter is not milling, there will have been some interesting inter-mill workings, no doubt mainly diesel hauled but quite likely occasionally with steam. |
