A Famous SO in Ukraine |
|
Parker Wilson reports: This SO17-1613 on display in Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine is notable for two reasons. It was one of the first trains in Berlin immediately after its capture by the Red Army, and it also pulled the leaders of the Soviet Union, including Joseph Stalin himself, to the Potsdam conference. The lettering on the front of the smokebox reads "Onwards to the West!", and was apparently made by its engineer from spent shell casings. Unfortunately it isn't in an easily accessible location. It's on the left bank of the city in front of the Nizhdneprovsk railway yard and station. |
