Some old British Cable Incline Railways

James Waite has sent me information and pictures of a couple he knows of personally, there must be many, many more, often totally derelict.

Tank Incline at Dinorwic

This photo was taken in 2000 from the car park at the old Gilfach Ddu shops of the Dinorwic quarry at Llanberis (now the Welsh National Slate Museum) looking up at the series of inclines connecting Vivian Quarry with Gilfach Ddu. As you can see the lowest one has been restored and is used for demonstrations. The higher ones haven't been restored though their site has been cleared.

Aberllefeni Slate Quarry

Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aberllefenni_Slate_Quarry

This at the top end of the Corris on 5th July 1969! It's a curious incline in that the track which carried the water balance tank wagon was a much wider gauge that the one carrying the slate wagons. The incline kept going until the early 1970's.

This is from a more recent, 22nd August 2005. The first picture shows the same scene as those above, on the northern side of the valley. The other two are of old inclines on the southern side of the valley (a separate seam though only about 100 metres away).
