Preserved Steam in East Malaysia |
|
At the time of writing (January 2025) there has been no active steam here since the pandemic and it seems unlikely it will resume. The four pictures on this page were taken by me (RD) in January 2001. NBR is short for North Borneo Railway, the pre-independence version of the current Sabah State Railway. There are three steam locomotives preserved at the Sabah State Museum NBR 13 is a 4W vertical boiler tram type locomotive, built by Sentinel (6375/1926): NBR 4, Sir H. Ralph Hone, is a Hunslet 4-6-4T (1091/1912). NBR 3-006, Gaya, a Hunslet (1110/1913) was originally a 4-6-4T like 7, but was later rebuilt. NBR 6-015 is a Hunslet 2-6-2 (6275/1955) a truncated version of the Indian metre gauge 2-8-2 YD class. It was working the tourist train on 20th January 2001. Two other identical locomotives are present on the railway 5-014 at Kinarut and 5-016 at Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu. |
