Walter Rothschild visited on 8th June 2025. He writes of his visit:
"The station building is large with an entrance hall, ticket automats, refreshment outlets and off to one side stairs leading to the Railway Museum Small Exhibits collection, very modern and very well displayed in glass cases but best to go when there is no school group filing the space!
Through the building is the main platform and then three island platforms, of which one is fenced and presumably was used for trains from
Russia... I did not see it used while I was there. The first island sees a fairly frequent service of Skoda double-deck emus to Kaunas etc. and beyond is the platform for the roughly-hourly railcar to the airport. The museum is then just a few yards further and visible from the main platform. A modern footbridge links all and also, over the museum tracks, to the road on the far side and the LG Freight headquarters. (There is also a passenger subway to the platforms). A ramp leads down to the platform with the items illustrated. Around midday I saw a LG Cargo orange diesel locomotive propel a rake of carriages into the main platform and depart westwards a half hour later - this was the only loco hauled train I observed. All else was dmus or emus."
Looking from afar I have to say that, to put it politely, the outdoor section of the museum appears
to be 'a work in progress', a wide ranging collection of items some of which seem to be slowly rusting away
Would be visitors have found access from the station was not possible but on the
occasion of his visit, Walter found the gate open and, like all good gricers, he needed no formal invitation... He has provided me with a very basic
set of notes and his complete set of photographs most of which were details in
lieu of written notes. As far as I can see, all rail mounted exhibits bar one were broad
gauge.
Some items are between two platforms, some against one, some stand free on both sides.
I have selected a range of items which would, I think, reflect most enthusiasts'
interests. I have included a residual list of other items Walter recorded at the end.

A gateway to heaven with no hint of a 'trespass
notice'. There are two water cranes, one made in 1938, and some signals,
including the lattice mast of one semaphore signal. It seems that the
country's railways have been ruthlessly modernised.

Perhaps the least expected exhibit was this train set which
originated at Alan Keef just a few miles down the road from my (RD's)
home. The plate reads 76/2005 and It carries the number 15001 as can be
seen. |
