Java Sugar Steam 1998 - Kediri Area Mills |
|
|
These mills are operated by PTP Nusantara X, previously PTP XXI\XXII, before that PNP XXI/XXII, and before that PNP XXI and PNP XXII. Individual and group visitors who check in officially can expect to be charged the equivalent of U$6 per person per mill. 24. LESTARI Mill Index If there are any locos left here they will be wrecks, the 3 remaining good locos now being at Gempolkerep. 25. MERICAN Mill Index Working normally on 1st August, 4 was cold on shed, 2 was shunting the mill feed and 5, 6, 7 and 8 were running trains from the road yard at 20-30 minute intervals. In the evening, the customary firework show was as good as ever, not least because the enthusiastic crews here are happy to 'turn on the blower' as required while the trains are made up. Exactly the same pattern was apparent on 22nd August. 26. PESANTREN Mill Index Working normally on 1st August. The shed was not visited nor the mill area, only the road delivery yard to save the effort of entering officially on a Saturday afternoon. 182 was on empties, 8, 216, 217 and 226 and a diesel were working, probably another two or three locos were also in steam. On 22nd August, there were 5 working locos, 8, 182, 216, 226, 228 with 217 in steam outside the shed with 150 alongside. If anyone has ever taken a decent photograph of the present operation I would be delighted to publish it..... However, where else in the world can you see such attractive and well turned out Mallets in 1998? 27. NGADIREJO Mill Index Visited briefly at midday on August 22nd. 205 and 210 were in steam in the mill yard, looking slightly smarter and better maintained than before. For the first time in many years, I found 210 actually moving some empties although 205 was sitting under a tree as usual. Definitely an expensive 10 minute visit at U$6 a head. 28. MOJOPANGGUNG Mill Index On 1st August, 2, 3, 7 and 8 were the working locos and 6 was receiving routine maintenance. Although it had been raining a lot here too, the mill seemed relatively busier than the Madiun ones. On 22nd August, the same locomotives were at work and again the mill seemed quite busy. 29. JOMBANG BARU Mill Index No trace of steam locos remains here. 30. CUKIR Mill Index The remaining steam locos were sold to the Kediri scrap merchant in 1996. 31. GEMPOLKEREP Mill Index I visited on August 23rd. The second Luttermöller ex-Lestari 4 is now a runner although 12 was in use on the mill shunt as usual. 3-L and 5 were working the empties at the mill end with small diesels at the north end. 11, 15, 18 and 19 were sharing the road yard duties with 3 diesels. The ash train was a diesel. This is now a very smart operation despite the cables used for shunting and the fact that a mill breakdown deprived us of a shot of the empties train. 14 has been repainted in an astonishing rainbow of colours and mounted outside the mill offices. 32. TULANGAN Mill Index Three of the remaining steam locos were sold to the Kediri scrap merchant in 1995; the other presumably was scrapped. Click here to return to the Java Contents Page. |
