Java Sugar Steam 2003 - Kediri Area Mills

These mills are operated by PTP Nusantara X, previously PTP XXI\XXII, before that PNP XXI/XXII, and before that PNP XXI and PNP XXII. Individual and group visitors who check in officially can expect to be charged the equivalent of U$6 per person per mill. At first sight, this area seems less affected by the problems in the industry than Solo and Madiun, but Mojopanggung must be under threat.

24. LESTARI Mill Index

If there are any locos left here they will be wrecks, the 3 remaining good locos now being at Gempolkerep.

25. MERICAN Mill Index

On 7th July, 2 was on the crusher. Only 4 and 8 were in use owing to an early season bagasse shortage, staff expected to use 5 and 6 later. In mid July, just 2 was in use but by 1st August only 6 was idle although some full trains were tractor hauled.

26. PESANTREN Mill Index

The number of Mallets working here has steadily decreased in recent years..... On 7th July just 216 was in use, apparently 214 was also serviceable and both were in use on August 1st/2nd. 212 was also used during the season.

27. NGADIREJO Mill Index

Although the mill has a couple of serviceable Mallets they were not in any kind of regular use in 2003.

28. MOJOPANGGUNG Mill Index

I did not make a visit in 2001/2 but I guess steam was in use there. However, all steam was stored in good order in 2003 and is unlikely to see use again.

29. JOMBANG BARU Mill Index

No trace of steam locos remains here.

30. CUKIR Mill Index

The remaining steam locos were sold to the Kediri scrap merchant in 1996.

31. GEMPOLKEREP Mill Index

I visited on 2nd July and found five locomotives in steam. Luttermöllers 4 and 12 as usual were shunting the crusher, 18 was in steam on shed and 19 was working from the fulls yard with the diesels. However, the empties were leaving the mill behind the small diesels and 15 was doing a 200m stint at the end - quite why it was needed at all was beyond me. Steam will continue here for a while but soon it will be just the Luttermöllers.

One Luttermöller good, two is even better.

32. TULANGAN Mill Index

Three of the remaining steam locos were sold to the Kediri scrap merchant in 1995; the other presumably was scrapped.
