30.01-09.02.2010 FarRail Tour:

Locomotives used on charters during the tour included 202.002, 440.008, 442.54, 442.55 and 442.59, as well as Krupp diesel 27D, Littorina N°. 2 and the Littorinella. 442.55 (said to be the best of the three serviceable 442s) was undergoing initial boiler washout at the shed, while 442.56 was still dismantled (with its boiler at the workshops), with no obvious signs of progress since last year. Nothing much has changed since previous reports, except that some new track has been laid in the former goods yard at Asmara station, and that Arbaroba the station building was under restoration. The repairs on Littorina N°. 7 have been completed (using parts from FIAT lorries). However, following test runs it appears that it will need some adjustments before becoming fully operational.

Plans are still under way to restore passenger and goods (salt, cement to Asmara, ore concentrate to Massawa for export) traffic between Massawa and Asmara, and eventually reopen the line to Keren and beyond (for the gold mine being built near Biscia). In November 2009 a three-man mission from ER went to Italy to visit various companies specializing in rolling stock refurbishment, as well as rail and concrete tie manufacturers. Some rolling stock is said to have been found in Italy and negotiations, being handled by the Eritrean embassy in Rome, are under way to acquire it.
