Myanmar Railways 2014/5

This steam locomotive and general update comes from Manfred Schoeler

1. Bagan - Kyaukpadaung

This service was introduced as a weekly service from 16th December 2014. After the inaugural train there was plenty of silence. The trains on 23rd December 2014 and 6th January 2015 did not run because of the number of bookings was below the minimum 15 passengers. Whether the other published dates (25th and 30th December and 1st January 2015) were more successful was not investigated.

Other days of planned operation for 2015:

January 1(New year), 6, 13, 20, 27
February 3, 10, 17, 24
March 3, 10, 17, 24, 31
April 7, 14, 21, 28
May 5, 12, 19, 26
June 2, 9, 16, 23, 30
July 7, 14, 21, 28
August 4, 11, 18, 25
September 1, 8, 15, 22, 29
October 6, 13, 20, 27
November 3, 10, 17, 24
December 1, 8, 15, 22, 25 (Christmas), 29

A shelter for YD 967 is under construction.

2. Yangon - Bago - Kyaiktio

There is a plan to introduce a similar operation from Yangon to Golden Rock. Tender for that operation will be opened in April 2015. Hopefully this service will be more successful than the Saturday only diesel railcar service Yangon - Kyaiktio. Due to the lack of interest this service was suspended from 1st January 2015.

3. More steam news

YC 629 is ready for use at Malwagon Locoshed. Don't hold your breath time: HQ gave order to rebuild it as coal burner! YD 964 is under repair in Insein works, YC 626 is another candidate for overhaul.

4. Pyuntaza Collection

A few month ago 5 locos left PTZ for Insein:

ST 768
YB 516, 548 (! coalburner)
YC 627
YD 970

5. Steam Locomotive Museum ?

Railway staff want to persuade the Government to install a railway museum.

6. Mac Arthur D class

Some time ago there was the discussion about how many D class survive in Myanmar. There are definitely two: D 1032 (ALCO 70699 / April 1943) at Pyuntaza and D 1019 (Davenport 2708 / 10.1944) together with ST 765 at Meiktila Traffic School.

ST 765 and D 1019 are the very special accessories in the living room of a local family (12/2014)

D 1032 at Pyuntaza Locoshed - the place she has been for decades

9. Yangon Harbour Railway

There is a new railcar service on the former Yangon harbour railway. Just opposite the famous Strand Hotel there are the stops for that service. There are two railcars in use. One runs westbound and one eastbound. Around 16:00 both railcars run to Pazundaung station and further to Malwagon Locoshed.

RBE 30.02 and RBE 30.01 are waiting for passengers opposite the Strand Hotel.

10. (Steam) Cranes at Insein

30 TSC 9878 stored at Insein Works

35 TSC 9887 stored at Insein Works

At least 5 of this smaller units are dumped in the workshops yards - they told us they were used for loading wood.

Details of the crane machinery.... guess they had diesel engines

.... the colors on the cab are long gone

11. Bago Semaphores

These are still doing their job, but the advertisement on the coaches is a little bit annoying..... I never tried the stuff (Andaman Gold). Another set is Red Bull, many others are Myanmar Beer......
