Three H.K. Porters in Bazil |
|
|
Way back in the 'noughties' Eddie Edmundson was a regular contributor to this site, he famously contributed Surviving Steam Locomotives in North East Brazil which is probably now (May 2024) probably still reasonably accurate but maybe not 100%! Three 1000 mm gauge H.K. Porter locomotives were purchased by the Usina São João near João Pessoa in the State of Paraíba, north east Brazil, in the 1940s. The sugar plantation railway ceased to function in 1976 or in 1978. All these locomotives were visible when I visited the usina in March 1994, but were in a derelict state. No. 3, Porter 7285, 1940, 0-8-0ST,"Sto Antonio". This locomotive was sent to ‘KG THERM Caldeira industrial’ in Pindamonhangaba, São Paulo for renovation. The pictures show: (1) The Porter in March 1994
(2) As it looked on arrival for renovation.
(3) Now incongruously displayed on a remnant of a railway bridge at the Tex Cotton factory in Blumenau, southern Brazil. The display suggests that it once ran on the EFSC (Estrada De Ferro Santa Catarina), which is not true. Sadly, although the renovation was complete enough for the locomotive to actually run, there is now no possibility of seeing this Porter in operation.
No.4, Porter 7999, 1946. Mogul. 2-6-0. "Potiguar". Abandoned in the yard at Usina São João in March 1994. The Inventory of Steam Locomotives in Brazil has a photo of this locomotive in a very derelict state at the Tubarão railway yard in August 2006
No. 5, Porter 8146, 07/1946. Consolidation 2-8-0. “Parahyba”. Photo (5) Abandoned in the yard at Usina São João in March 1994.
