Two Baldwins in Brazil |
Perhaps you could be interested to know about two Baldwins, one safely preserved and the other, sadly, in the edge of extinction. The first one is Baldwin nr. 42, builder nr. 38050, b/d 1912, gauge 762mm. which belonged to Estrada de Ferro Oeste de Minas, later Rede Mineira de Viação and at last, Rede Ferroviaria Federal S.A. It is preserved in operational condition, working along the remaining section of the old EFOM, between São João Del Rey and Tiradentes, a tourist railroad in the state of Minas Gerais. The photo was taken on September 1983 in São João Del Rey (MG), where now there is also a museum with many static displays of the former "Bitolinha" (small gauge), as the narrow gauge EFOM was affectionately known.
By the other hand, nr. 14, builder nr.40674, b/d October 1913, a 2-6-2, once owned by the famous Estrada de Ferro Perus Pirapora, a 600mm gauge limestone carrier railroad in São Paulo, is in derelict condition, together with other Baldwin gems of the same railroad. The photo was taken at the Cajamar yard, now covered with grass and debris, on May 11, 1996 and, unless some action could be made to save them, the engines are in risk of being rusting beyond salvation. A small group of railfans and people involved with the local history, are trying to implement some rescue, but after many efforts, nothing effective could be done until now.
