Steam in West and Central China. A brief report, 3rd - 18th March 2007

by Tobias Schmidt und Jörg Ortlepp

Pucheng, Liujiaxia, Baiyin, Shibanxi

4 Classes Trip (2xQJ, 2xJS, 6xSY, 2xC2)

Pucheng - Baishui

There is a sensation to report! The former QJ test locomotive 7291 has been overhauled. This, the highest numbered QJ in China, was tested as a gas burner with an industrial type gas producer in its tender. Having been converted back to a normal QJ, it was sold to industry in 1992. Had the test been successful, perhaps more QJs would remain in service today. After an accident, the fate of the locomotive appeared to be sealed. Otherwise operations as previously with few workings, all in the hands of DF4s, the steam locomotives not turning a wheel.

Seen:
QJ 7291
QJ 6871
QJ 6928 out of use

Liujiaxia

Operating as previously reported. The school train does not run on Sundays. When heavily loaded, the afternoon train to Hekonan runs with 2 JS. 2 JS with identical numbers were working???

Seen:
JS 8227
JS 8223 with number JS 8227???

Baiyin

Here also is a small sensation!. SY 2008 has become an Olympic Games advertising locomotive. It has been newly overhauled and decorated with the official Olympics logo. Further the smokebox has been painted silver. Thus it may be one of the few steam locomotives since 1936 to advertise for an Olympic Games. Otherwise traffic normal. The goods tran appears to operate only every second day.

Seen:

SY 0819
SY 1049
SY 1470
SY 1581

Shibanxi

Normal traffic. Many enthusiasts arrived here for the Globe Steam special train which was cancelled. Weather was mixed.

Seen:
