Industrial systems worldwide have a well deserved reputation for putting the prospect of a bargain at the top of their requirements when buying second hand power. The purchase of three (original WCC 5-7) South African Railways 1929 built 16DA Pacifics must have come firmly into this category because their large driving wheels must have made them less than totally suitable for a short colliery railway with appreciable gradients. One of them, WCC 6 was at Wankie No 2 mine on 25th June 1981, having been specially turned for Dusty Durrant. He was only just in time, within a year all were out of use. (BA1) |
