Safari Steam South

The chrome mines at Selukwe (Shurugwe) built a 2ft 0in (610mm) gauge system which was originally steam operated. During dieselisation, the 7 surviving locomotives were dispersed (an eighth, Brush built 'Excalibur' was already preserved in Bulawayo). Two of them ended up on the Gwelo (Gweru) Light Railway where they worked for some time at weekends. The first locomotive sent to Gwelo, 6, 'Buckeye' was in the shed there in 1968. (BR)
