Safari Steam North

The 4-8-2 + 2-8-4 were remarkable machines. At 70 tonnes, on a railway restricted to a mere 5 tonne axle load, with a tractive effort of 11 000 kg, these locomotives could haul 270 tonne trains up 1 in 50 grades. Originally coal burners they were later converted to oil which could be imported from Nigeria. (JW)
