Safari Steam - The Portuguese Domain

Of all the one time European colonial powers, Portugal made the most complete withdrawal from the African scene. Lacking the economic muscle of most of its competitors, it left Angola and Mozambique with precious little except a fine set of railways, the most significant of which were of more importance in carrying goods to and from its neighbours than in developing the countries themselves. It is a matter of historical record that both descended into prolonged, bloody civil wars exacerbated by the fact that they were also proxy wars with both sides supported by outside countries.

Until the mid-1970s the railways here were a joy to behold. The slow pace of economic development had caused them to maintain their original importance as transport arteries and the management of all the railways kept their charges in pristine condition. Operational standards were high and the variety of steam locomotive in use was far greater for the size of system than most other countries.
