It was always easy to identify a Mombasa 59 class. Not only were they usually better turned out than their Nairobi sisters, but Jim Field, the shedmaster, instituted the practice of giving numberplates a black background. Of course 5918 'Mount Gelai' had a few extra additions too.... (KP)
