In common with many African countries, the then Gold Coast took delivery of many 4-8-0s in the early 20th century. 173 (Hawthorn Leslie, 3433/1921) was at Accra on 2nd December 1967. The fact that several lasted till the end of steam is testament to the basic soundness of design and their suitability for the railway. (JW)
