The International Steam Pages

Acknowledgements

We are fortunate that much of the surviving steam operation in southern and eastern Africa was well documented by visitors in the late 1960s and 1970s. However, certain areas were more popular than others and it has not always been easy to get a balanced selection. Hence some of the pictures used in this CD-ROM were taken in less than ideal conditions. Often they represent a unique record of an era which has passed and your understanding of this is essential to your enjoyment.

Young Dickinsons gricing in Nairobi, 1979.
Without the co-operation of the late Basil Roberts (BR), who allowed me to go through his entire collection taken while resident in southern Africa from 1968 to 1970, it would have been impossible to compile this CD-ROM. Chris Walker (CW1)@ was an absolute mine of information on obscure railways and locomotives. Other contributors are also gratefully acknowledged: Bryan Acford (BA1), Bill Alborough (BA2)@, John Alexander (JA), Paul Ash (PA), Peter Bagshawe (PB), Terry Bagworth (TB), Hugh Ballantyne (HB)@, Roland Beier (RB1), Donald Bell (DB)@, Cyril Boucher (AB per Andrew Boucher)@, Richard Bowen (RB2)@, Mark Carter (MC), Keith Chester (KC), David Dixon (DD@), John Dobson (JD), Rod Farr (RF), Ray Gardiner (RG)@, Alex Gillieron (AG), Olaf Güttler (OG), Günter Haslbeck (GH), Hans Hufnagel (HH), Thomas Kautzor (TK), Rob Kingsford-Smith (RK), Jeffrey Lanham (JL), Nigel Lawrence (NL), Peter Michie (PM)@, David Mitchell (DM), Geoff Monks (GM), Andy Nimmo (AN), Thierry Nicholas (TN), Kevin Patience (KP), Graham Roberts (GR), Karl Rummans (KR), Cliff Schoff (CS1), Alan Short (AS), Charles Small (John Agnew collection, CS2)@, Geoffrey Smith (GS)@, Trevor Staats (TS), Manfred Stolz (MS2), Mike Swift (MS1), Tony Wardrobe (TW), Chris Wilkinson (CW2)@, Jeremy Wiseman (JW)@. Those whom I believe are no longer with us I have indicated with "@".

The maps have been taken from public sources and redrawn. They show the railways in the region at the time most of the pictures were taken, namely approximately 1970.
