Fairford Steam Rally 2014
Working Steam

This is one of a series of pages which I have uploaded to illustrate facets of steam rallies we have attended in the UK. Such events occur all over the country in the summer months, they are easily found by using your favourite search engine and may have anything between a handful of steam engines and hundreds (as at the Great Dorset Steam Fair which could probably be fairly described as having an excess of riches). Click here for the Fairford 2014 index and click here for the overall index for 2014.

On arrival, the ploughing engines were still on their trailers, the engine berth for the saw bench was empty and the threshing machine was covered over. Things could only get better and for the most part they did although the cover never came off the thresher. The video stayed in the bag, the sun put in only fleeting appearances, it would have been too frustrating to record.

Saw Bench

It seemed the expected engine was a 'no show' and being a small show the amount of choice for a replacement was limited. Eventual a road locomotive McLaren 1295/1911 was 'roped in', superpower for the small Marshall bench.

Steam Ploughing

Four Fowler ploughing engines, two steam (14257/1916 and 15163/1918 and two diesel conversions (14379/1917 and 14380/1917) were working next to each other using a plough and a cultivator successively over a harvested field..
