Fawley Hill Steam Rally 2014
Miscellaneous Steam Engines

This is one of a series of pages which I have uploaded to illustrate facets of steam rallies we have attended in the UK (since 2013). Such events occur all over the country in the summer months, they are easily found by using your favourite search engine and may have anything between a handful of steam engines and hundreds (as at the Great Dorset Steam Fair which could probably be fairly described as having an excess of riches). Click here for the Fawley Hill index and click here for the overall 2014 index.

Steam Locomotive

The Fawley Hill estate has an extremely steep standard gauge 'garden' railway on which Hudswell Clarke (1026/1913) 0-6-0ST 'Sir Robert McAlpine' was giving rides to the visitors. Direct access to the line is only possible at the top station although there were a couple of view points of the final ascent to it. In the background are parts of the old Blackfriars iron bridge and London and South Western Railway archways . There is also a railway museum stuffed with an eclectic mix of railwayana.

Steam Fire Engine and Pump

There were two Shand Mason machines present. The upper one is a fire engine and was supplied to Sedgwick's Brewery in Watford. It was attended by some traditionally dressed firemen. They had their 'day in the sun' when they paraded around the arena as part of the heavy horse display.

The second machine is actually a trench drainer originally owned by the Metropolitan Water Board although it seems almost indistinguishable from a fire engine! It spent the day doing some dummy pumping as seen in the video clip.

Fairground Centre Engines

One set of Gallopers was being powered by a Savage centre engine (664/1896, Lady Go Lightly), from the evidence of my video, the organ engine did not seem to be in use. Seen later at Llandudno in 2015.

Parked next to the refreshment tent was another Savage engine (537/1887) which was being used to generate electricity. It was once owned by Bill McAlpine.
